Urban Bootcamp: Creative Couple Therapy

Even creative relationships need some tuning from time to time. Maintaining an inspiring creative relationship is actually hard work. Sometimes you can feel unchallenged, bored or even misunderstood because preserving the foundation of curiosity and excitement is not an easy job.

You need to work on your stuff, but you also need to work for your Art-Copy marriage. Because only teaming up, communicating and supporting each other will get the best out of you and help you grow better ideas. It’s basically Creative Couple Therapy: you need to be happy together to get great work done.


The Creative Couple Therapy Experience

Creative Couple Therapy is a 4-day Urban Bootcamp, that will take place at Cluj Hub between the 5th and 8th of November. We invite all creative couples (art directors & copywriters) to join an inspiring experience in the heart of Transylvania. You’ll have the chance to connect with each other, get fresh ideas from the workshops and work on your craft. All these while you visit the beautiful places in and around Cluj-Napoca. You’ll discover a surprisingly vibrant city and charming region, the perfect place to fall (professionally) in love with each other.


Who are the ‘therapists’?

Alex Taylor

Alexandra Taylor

Alexandra is the winner of D&AD President's Award, for outstanding contribution to creativity, the first female recipient in 52 years of D&AD. The D&AD Award is widely considered the most prestigious and difficult-to-win awards in design and advertising in Europe. Alexandra is teaching Art Direction for D&AD and the prestigious School of Communication Arts London. She has been awarded over 200 entries in the D&AD Annual, 16 pencils and several Golds and best overall tv ad at Cannes.

Will Awdry

Will Awdry is a creative director at the Big Fish design consultancy. He has worked in advertising for three and a half decades, mostly as a copywriter, creative director and - briefly - acting managing director. He and his teams have made an impression and have received awards at D&AD, Cannes, the One Show and others. Some of his clients, past and present, include Levi’s, Audi, Dove soap, Knorr, the BBC, The Guardian, WWF, BP and many, many others. Will has led D&AD’s Writing Course since 2000 for a wide range of groups from communication agencies to various clients and organizations around the world. He has also led several juries for writing awards.

What will you learn?

During the Urban Bootcamp, Alexandra Taylor will share her own wisdom and experience, as well as that of the high profile professionals she has worked with. She will explain in detail her own work for significant brands, share the work and advice of other highly appreciated art directors and reveal how to get the best out of working with collaborators.

Will Awdry will also share his own wisdom and experience, as well as that of the high profile professionals he has worked with.

As a copywriter, you will possess a broader context in which to situate your writing, investigate how to keep your writing personal and access more richly persuasive content. You’ll work on several compression exercises and headline generation techniques. 

As an art director, you will get into the depths of the theory behind great art direction and you will put that theory into practice so you can actually produce great art direction. 

As a team, you will primarily be inspired to re-oxygenate your copywriting and art direction skills. You’ll understand how to rapidly define your own workable strategies, to always keep the audience in mind and to come up with persuasive and compelling arguments.
